Scapa Skiren is a single malt from the Scapa distillery on Orkney, bottled at 40% ABV in a 70cl bottle. It was launched in 2015, when the distillery renewed its core range.
The whisky is matured in first-fill American oak ex-bourbon casks, which give it a distinct vanilla character and a touch of wood. Skiren is a Norwegian-rooted name meaning roughly 'bright light of the firmament'. The distillery was founded in 1885 and sits close to Highland Park.
On the nose there is green apple, pineapple, honey and vanilla with a hint of aniseed. The palate is sweet and fruity, with pear, apple and gentle spice, and the finish is medium, turning peppery and woody.
