A 10 year old Islay single malt released by the independent bottler Hunter Laing under the Scarabus name, bottled at 46% ABV. It was matured in American oak and refill bourbon casks.
Scarabus is Gaelic for a rocky place, and is also the name of a mystical spot on Islay. The nose is peaty and iodine-like, with a light sweetness. The palate starts with gentle peat smoke that builds and turns more maritime, followed by menthol, old leather and the sweetness again. The finish is fairly long, peaty and smoky, with a little seaweed and oak.
