Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash Whiskey is a small batch Kentucky whiskey in its 2025 release, at 45.6% ABV (91.2 proof). It recalls John Shenk, who founded a distillery in 1753 that became known as Michter's in the twentieth century.
It is made by the sour mash method, with some of the earlier mash added to each new batch, and it uses a good amount of rye. Part of the matured whiskey was finished in toasted, uncharred French oak from the Vosges, seasoned for 24 months.
The nose offers toasty burnt sugar, spice and honey. The palate is rich and sweet, with baking spice, dried fruit, toffee and nougat, and the finish is smooth with lingering spice.
