The Balvenie PortWood 21 Year Old is a Speyside single malt matured for 21 years, first in traditional American oak and then in port pipes that previously held port wine.
This finishing technique was developed by David C. Stewart MBE, a former Malt Master at The Balvenie, and the whisky has been in the range since 1996. Current Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie oversees the maturation. The port casks add depth to the whisky and give it a deep ruby colour.
The nose offers ripe fruit, honey, nuts, port and oak. The palate brings dried fruit, caramel, spice, a touch of smoke and port, leading to a long, warm, soft finish with hints of oak and fruit.
