This is a single cask Ardbeg from Islay, distilled in 1976 and matured for 31 years in a sherry butt. It was bottled at cask strength, 52.4% ABV, in 2008 as an official bottling, in a 70cl bottle. The outturn from cask 2397 was 519 bottles.
It was released in the years after Glenmorangie acquired the distillery.
The nose opens with chocolate and wood smoke, then oxtail stock, damp earth, mushrooms, pipe tobacco, soot and unlit Havana cigars. The palate is peaty, with tar, cough syrup, herbal liqueurs and beef stock. The finish is very long, earthy and ashy, with peppery chocolate.
