This is a single cask Ardbeg from Islay, distilled on 13 September 1979 and bottled by Signatory Vintage on 18 June 2020. It was released as a Rare Reserve within the Cask Strength Collection, after four decades in a bourbon barrel, and cask 9861 gave 82 bottles at 56.8%. It is non-chill-filtered and has no added colouring.
Peat and salt remain firmly in charge, with vanilla and candied apple adding sweetness, and earth and oak in support.
The nose combines dense smoke with lemon sorbet, dark earth, ash and vanilla. The palate is almost syrupy, with peat smoke, sea salt, candied apple and black pepper. The finish is long and peaty, with salted caramel, tar and a medicinal note.
