Ardbeg 40 Year Old is a single cask Islay malt bottled by Signatory Vintage in its Rare Reserve series. It was distilled at Ardbeg on 13 September 1979 and bottled on 18 June 2020 at a cask strength of 56.8% ABV.
The whisky spent the full forty years in a single bourbon barrel, number 9861. Peat smoke remains the foundation, with vanilla, ripe fruit and spicy oak added by the long maturation, and notes of sweetness and salt.
