Ardbeg Anamorphic is the 2023 Committee release from Ardbeg on Islay, a peated single malt bottled at 48.2% ABV in a 750ml bottle. It is non-chill filtered and of natural colour.
Dr Bill Lumsden set out to unlock a hidden fourth dimension of Ardbeg flavour. Ex-bourbon casks had their heads deeply scored to expose more wood, were given an intense 'high mocha' infrared toasting, and were then flame-charred.
The nose is earthy and slightly biscuity, with restrained soot and tar, and with water it opens to smoked vetiver root, aniseed and jasmine. The palate is peppery and warming, with chilli chocolate, bitter-sweet mocha and birch tar. The finish is long, sooty and tarry.
