Ardbeg – Heavy Vapours (70cl, 46%)

Ardbeg Heavy Vapours is an Islay single malt released for Ardbeg Day 2023. It was distilled without the purifier that is normally fitted to the spirit still, so the heavier vapours were not returned for redistillation. It matured in ex-bourbon casks and was bottled at 46%, without chill-filtration or added colouring. The result is a dark, strongly smoky whisky with a marked earthiness, joined by chocolate, peppermint and spice. The nose is led by strong smoke with a slightly sweet side, farmyard notes, creosote, tarry rope and dark chocolate. The palate is warming and bittersweet, with coal dust, cardamom, eucalyptus and coffee grounds. The finish is long and powerful, with a lingering, almost numbing feel.
