An Islay single malt launched in March 2017 as a limited edition for members of the Ardbeg Committee. It was matured in a combination of virgin Black Sea oak casks, sourced from the Adyghe Republic in Russia, and ex-bourbon barrels, and bottled at 51.7% ABV. The name comes from the kelpie, a mythical water spirit of the deep ocean.
The nose is salty and maritime, with herbal aromas, oily peat, sweet barbecue smoke and a hint of pine resin. The palate is thick and oily, with black pepper, dark chocolate, Turkish coffee, clove oil and savoury smoked bacon or fish. The finish is very long and spiced, with charred oak, coal tar and hickory.
