Basil Hayden is a Kentucky straight bourbon, introduced in 1992 by Booker Noe as part of the Small Batch collection. It was made to show a more subtle side of bourbon.
The name comes from Meredith Basil Hayden, Sr., an 18th-century Maryland rye farmer who moved to Kentucky and used a higher percentage of rye in his mash bill. Booker Noe revived that approach.
The nose has charred oak, vanilla caramel and dried fruit. The palate adds brown sugar and a touch of black pepper to the charred oak and dried fruit. The finish is lingering, with charred oak and a little dried fruit.
