Basil Hayden Malted Rye is a Kentucky straight rye malt whiskey, made from a mash bill of 100% malted rye and matured in new charred oak barrels. It is bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) by James B. Beam Distilling Co.
The brand is named after Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., an 18th century Kentucky distiller.
The nose is delicately floral with a soft note of dill, opening into oak, caramel and gentle baking spice. On the palate come cinnamon, sweet vanilla, toasted rye bread, honey and light almond, soft and rounded. The finish is short to medium, clean and lightly warming, with chocolate.
