Octomore 17.1 is a heavily peated Islay single malt from Bruichladdich, bottled at 59.7% in a 70cl bottle. Its phenol level is 81 ppm, and it was matured for five years entirely in first-fill bourbon casks.
It is made only from Concerto barley, grown on the Scottish mainland. It was bottled at the distillery without chill-filtration or added colouring.
The nose opens with sweet malt and vanilla custard, then toasted coconut, butterscotch, citrus peel and green melon, with smoke that starts out restrained. The palate is viscous and sweet, with pear drops and malt syrup, before peat arrives in waves with sea salt. The finish is long, with mineral dryness and lingering peat smoke.
