This is a Caol Ila Distillers Edition from Islay, distilled in 1995 and bottled in 2007 at 43% ABV. It is finished in re-charred American oak seasoned with Moscatel from a bodega, which sets Moscatel sweetness against the distillery's Islay peat.
The nose is clean peat smoke, bonfire ash and sea spray, with dried apricot, orange zest and sultanas. On the palate smoke comes first, then honeyed malt and Moscatel fruit, with cinnamon, pepper and a touch of oak char. The finish is long, with drying smoke, layered spice and lingering fruit.
