This is a 31-year-old Islay single malt from Caol Ila, distilled in 1993 and bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society as 'Maritime Drift'. It was matured in a single first-fill ex-bourbon hogshead, which gave 230 bottles, each in a 70cl size.
The nose recalls a boat builder's workshop, with warm sanded oak, black cardamom, honey, sweet popcorn, smoky pears, butterscotch and sea air, plus a dark note of blackcurrant jam. The palate is sweet and tooth-coating, with smoked pink grapefruit zest, pear juice and honey-glazed lobster. Water brings toffee apples and lemon-dressed prawns, and the finish is thick vanilla sponge cake.
