This is a 40 year old Islay single malt from Caol Ila, bottled independently by Douglas Laing in its Xtra Old Particular series.
The whisky was distilled in June 1979 and spent four decades in a refill cask, which was opened in November 2019. The cask yielded 232 bottles.
The nose is coastal, with seaweed and damp wood. On the palate it is intensely salty, followed by iodine, chimney soot and peated barley. The finish is pleasantly spicy and gently smoky.
