Golden Eight is a Williams pear liqueur from Distillerie Massenez, a family-run distillery in Dieffenbach-au-Val, Alsace, founded in 1870. About 20 pounds of pears go into each bottle.
What sets it apart is the pear eau-de-vie added to the liqueur, aged for more than eight years in oak. That ageing brings vanilla, caramel and warmth to the fresh fruit, and gives the liqueur an amber colour. At 25% it is sweet and rounded, with more backbone than a typical cordial. It suits serving chilled, over ice or with desserts.
The nose offers ripe Williams pear, white flowers, honey, vanilla and delicate citrus. On the palate come juicy pear, baked orchard fruit, light caramel and sweet spice. The finish is long and fresh, with a soft, pastry-like warmth.
