This is Hakushu 12, a single malt matured for 12 years in bourbon casks and released for the 100th anniversary of Suntory. The Japan Edition is the original bottling made for the Japanese market, in a 70cl bottle at 43% ABV.
Hakushu distillery was built in 1973 on Mount Kaikomagatake, which makes it one of the highest-sited distilleries in the world. Its water comes from a nearby mountain spring.
The nose is complex, with pear, a touch of lemon and some smoke. The palate is fruity and honey-sweet with a little oak, and the finish is long, with a trace of smoke.
