Embra is Release No. 2 from Holyrood, the young Edinburgh distillery, and its first peated single malt. The recipe uses 56% heavily peated malt, 41% distilling malt and 3% chocolate malt, with several yeasts including a passion fruit wine yeast.
It matured in first-fill bourbon barrels, Islay quarter casks and new American oak, and was bottled in 2024 at 43.6%, without chill-filtering or added colour. The run was 8,188 bottles.
The nose offers lemon peel, bitter horse chestnut, a touch of peppermint and light hickory smoke. On the palate, wafer biscuit and dark chocolate mousse meet earthy peat smoke. The finish brings stewed pear.
