J. Henry & Sons Bellefontaine Reserve is a five-year Wisconsin straight bourbon, bottled at 51.72% ABV in a 750ml bottle. It is made at the Henry family's farm distillery in Dane, Wisconsin, where the family grows the grain.
The mashbill is four heirloom grains: red corn, winter wheat, rye and malted barley. The bourbon spent five and a half years in new charred oak, then eight months in ex-V.S.O.P. Cognac casks. It is reduced to strength with water that has itself been aged in ex-bourbon barrels.
Caramel and vanilla frosting lead the nose, with allspice and a hint of lime. The palate moves from brown sugar to black pepper, cinnamon and red fruit, and the finish is long, with dark chocolate and espresso.
