J. Henry & Sons Four Grain Rye is a small-batch rye whiskey from a Wisconsin farm distillery, bottled at 50% in a 75cl bottle. Each batch is just 20 barrels.
The mashbill is 64% Spooner rye, 14% red heirloom corn, 14% winter wheat and 8% malted barley. The spirit ages in new, charred American oak barrels in a barn with no climate control.
The nose is caramel apple, candied pear, lemon tart and citrus zest, with honey and a thread of roasted coffee. The palate is full and chewy, with rye spice, lemon meringue pie, cinnamon and vanilla. The finish is long, with lemon, clove, apple crisp and caramel, and a little pipe tobacco.
