Jack Daniel's Master Distiller Series No. 4 is the fourth release in a six-bottle series made between 2012 and 2017, each honouring a different master distiller. This one, released in October 2015, is for Jess Gamble, who ran the Lynchburg distillery from 1964 to 1966 and was the first head distiller from outside the Jack Daniel family.
It is charcoal mellowed Tennessee whiskey, filtered through ten feet of sugar maple charcoal and aged in new American oak. It is bottled at 43% (86 proof) in a 750ml bottle, individually numbered and boxed with Gamble's portrait.
The nose is sweet vanilla, toasted oak and banana, with a hint of smoke and dry spice. Caramel, banana, nuts and soft fruit sit on the palate, and the finish is medium long with a touch of smoke and oak.
