Joseph Phelps Freestone Pinot Noir 2023 is a Sonoma Coast red from vineyards eight miles from the Pacific, near the town of Freestone. The soils are Goldridge sandy loam over sandstone and shale, with coastal fog and Pacific winds giving a cool growing season. Joe Phelps bought the land in 1999 after a long search for a place where Pinot Noir would thrive, and the first Freestone vintage followed in 2001. The wine is expressive, finely balanced and fruit-forward. Red cherries and summer berries sit alongside black pepper, cassis, forest floor, tangerine peel, sandalwood and tea.
