Kilkerran 12 Years is a single malt from the Glengyle distillery in Campbeltown, which reopened in 2004. It is lightly peated, at 15 ppm, and is non-chill-filtered. It was matured in a combination of 70% ex-bourbon casks and 30% ex-sherry casks.
The nose combines oak, dried fruit, cherries and marzipan with a trace of peat smoke. The palate opens with soft peat and intense malt, then moss, ash and cooked apples, with digestive biscuits, vanilla and a little lemon. The finish has a surprisingly full, oily texture, with green apples, peaches, nutmeg, herbs and gentle, delicate peat.
