This is Macallan Chairman's Release, the flagship of The 1700 Series, a no age statement single malt bottled in 2001 for the Chinese market. It matured in European sherry oak casks, and 5,000 bottles were released. It comes in a decanter made from flint glass.
The series is named for Easter Elchies House, built in 1700 by Captain John Grant of Elchies. Alexander Reid rented the house in 1820 and founded the Macallan distillery on the estate four years later.
The nose brings soft fruit, sweet vanilla and spicy ginger. Rich fruit mingles with oak vanilla and spiced orange on the palate, and the finish is long, with sweet citrus and oak.
