Mars Komagatake IPA Cask Finish is a 2023 Japanese single malt bottled at 52% ABV. It was distilled at the Mars Shinshu Distillery in Nagano Prefecture, at about 800 metres in the Central Alps.
The whisky first matured in ex-bourbon barrels, then was finished in casks that had held an India Pale Ale brewed at the neighbouring Minami Shinshu Brewery.
The nose brings grapefruit peel, pineapple cake, herbal hops, pine resin and vanilla. On the palate, pineapple cake and orange candy give way to tart grapefruit, hop bitterness, pine sap and a whisper of smoke. The finish is medium in length, crisp and slightly bitter.
