Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash Whiskey 2023 is a Kentucky sour mash whiskey from Michter's, made with a significant share of rye that includes malted rye. It is bottled at 45.6%, or 91.2 proof.
It forms part of the Michter's Legacy series, which honours John Shenk, who founded the distillery in 1753. The whiskey is made in small batches and matured in special French oak casks from the Vosges region.
On the nose there are caramelised apples, candied orange peel and brown sugar, with spicy and floral touches. The palate is soft and viscous, with vanilla, honey, stewed red fruits, peppery rye and a little toasted oak. The finish is long, with chocolate, dried fruit and candied orange peel.
