Middle West Spirits Dark Pumpernickel Rye is an American rye whiskey from Columbus, Ohio, made in small batches and bottled at 48% in a 75cl bottle. It is described as the first dark pumpernickel rye whiskey produced in North America.
The mashbill is 80% dark pumpernickel rye, 10% non-GMO yellow corn, 5% soft red winter wheat and 5% two-row barley. It is aged for over three years in new white American oak casks.
The nose is dark maple syrup, chocolate malt, dried fig and fennel. The palate brings burnt orange, Demerara sugar, dried cherry, dark rye bread and bitter chocolate. The finish is medium-long and warming, with pumpernickel spice and a hint of wood smoke.
