Mosgaard – Batch 1 Peated, French Oak and Bourbon Cask (48.4%)

Mosgaard Batch 1 is the first peated single malt from the Danish distillery, bottled at 48.4%. The smoke is moderate, at around 25 ppm. It was matured in two stages: the first two years in first-fill French oak, which gave a dark colour and spicy notes, then a final year in ex-bourbon casks, which added vanilla. Double maturation of this kind is unusual for a peated whisky, and smoke, spice and vanilla sweetness come together in the glass. A few drops of water help it open up, and the nose changes noticeably at around 43 to 44%.
