Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky (70cl, 45%)

This is a single grain whisky from Nikka, distilled in a Coffey still and first released in 2012. It is bottled at 45% ABV in a 70cl bottle. Nikka's founder Masataka Taketsuru introduced the Coffey still in 1963. It is less efficient than a modern continuous still but keeps more of the grain's aroma and flavour, and the mash is corn-based, which gives the whisky a pronounced sweetness. The nose is woody vanilla, toasty biscuit notes, custard cream, chocolate and a hint of burnt sugar. The palate is clean and smooth, with vanilla, honey, chocolate and caramel. The finish has a touch of spice and fades cleanly.
