This Miyagikyo release is one of the first two in the Nikka Discovery series for the US market, bottled at 48% without chill-filtering. The series looks at techniques Nikka has refined since its founding in 1934, ahead of its 90th anniversary in 2024.
It is made solely from peated malts, a departure for a distillery known for lighter, fruitier whiskies. The edition runs to 20,000 bottles.
The nose offers toast, dry peat and twigs, with exotic fruit and fresh fig emerging. The palate is honeyed and floral over rooty peat and ash, and the long finish brings chocolate, vanilla, spicy peat and ripe fruit.
