Nikka Yoichi Discovery Non-Peated is a Japanese single malt made only from whiskies distilled from unpeated malt. It is bottled at 47% in a 70cl bottle, without chill-filtration, and has added colour.
Yoichi still heats its stills directly with coal, which brings a smoky character of its own alongside fruity sweetness and a full mouthfeel. The whisky belongs to Nikka's Discovery series, launched in 2021 ahead of the company's 90th anniversary in 2024, and 20,000 bottles were released worldwide.
The nose combines malted barley, green banana, Golden Delicious apple and acacia honey, with pineapple, coriander and black pepper emerging. Lemon and grapefruit open the palate, followed by vanilla and coffee-like roast. The long finish begins malty and turns to star anise, coconut milk and nuts.
