An 18-year-old release of Port Charlotte, the heavily peated single malt from Bruichladdich on Islay, distilled from 100% Scottish barley and bottled at 52.5% with a phenol level of 40PPM.
The whisky is a marriage of three parts: 53% matured in bourbon casks, 31% in sherry casks, and 16% held in sherry casks for 11 years before about five years in new French oak. All of it was then recasked into second-fill bourbon casks before bottling.
The nose offers figs, sultanas and raisins with sweet smoke, then charred oak and tobacco. The palate brings brown sugar, apricot jam and barbecue smoke, and the finish carries wood spices, smoked leather and a nutty salinity.
