Powers Irish Rye is an Irish rye whiskey made from 100% Irish rye, grown entirely on the Cooney Furlong Farm in County Wexford and made at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork. Mash throughput was reduced and fermentation times extended for this revival of a grain idea Powers tried in the past.
It matures in a mix of fresh American oak and first-fill and refill casks. It is bottled at 43.2%, in a 70cl bottle, without chill-filtration.
The nose has burnt orange, maraschino cherry, toffee banana and fresh rye bread, with clove, white pepper, ginger, vanilla and charred oak. The palate brings candied ginger, orange peel, clove and peppermint, then caramelised apple and red liquorice. The long finish holds a tingle of chilli oil and honey-glazed fruit.
