R. Jelinek 5 Year Old is a Czech plum brandy, triple-distilled and aged for five years, bottled at 50% in a 75cl bottle. It comes from R. Jelinek Distilleries in Vizovice, whose slivovitz recipe dates to 1894.
The plum pits stay in the mash throughout fermentation, adding tannins and bitter-almond character. Oak ageing then rounds out the fruit and brings vanilla and caramel.
The nose offers ripe plum, almond kernel and soft oak spice. The palate is smooth and velvety, with concentrated plum, toasted almond, caramel and a little vanilla. The finish is warming and mellow, with lingering plum sweetness.
