Lost Monarch is a blend of straight bourbon and straight rye from Redwood Empire Distilling in Graton, Sonoma County, bottled at 45% (90 proof). It is named after the largest coast redwood on earth by volume, and the bottle carries the tree's GPS coordinates and dimensions down its side.
The blend is led by rye, made from 95% rye and 5% malted barley. The bourbon component is 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley, and the barrels are of varying ages.
The nose offers clove, cinnamon, vanilla, orange zest, butterscotch and a hint of sandalwood. On the palate, corn sweetness and rye spice come together in a maple syrup note with vanilla and caramel, before a persistent, subdued finish of gentle pepper and oak.
