Saburomaru III The Empress is a Japanese single malt from the Saburomaru Distillery in Tonami, distilled in 2020 and bottled in 2023 at 48%. It is the first in its series made with malt dried over Islay peat, at 50 ppm, and it is not chill-filtered and has no added colour.
It is the fourth bottling in a series named after tarot cards. The label shows the Major Arcana III image in a paper-cut design by Yukie Kano, an artist from Toyama. This 48% version was limited to 12,000 bottles.
The nose offers young wood, vanilla, dry peat, pear, pineapple and a hint of kombu. The palate is soft for its strength, with salt and peat smoke. In the finish, sweetness fades first and smoke lingers.
