Saburomaru V The Hierophant is a heavily peated Japanese single malt from Saburomaru Distillery in Tonami, Toyama Prefecture. It was distilled in 2021 and bottled in 2024 at 48% in a 70cl bottle, in an edition of 12,600 bottles. It is non-chill-filtered and has no added colouring.
The name refers to tarot card number V. For the 2021 vintage the distillery combined matured ale yeast with fresh whisky yeast, aiming for ripe, dense aromas.
The nose brings nori, coastal notes and straw, with soft oak, elegant smoke, pear, menthol and a trace of ham and cheese. The palate is soft, with nori, salty wakame, malt sweetness, rice porridge, lemon peel and tea candy. The finish holds gentle peat and malt sweetness.
