Shinobu 15 Year Old Pure Malt is a blended malt from the Shinobu Distillery in Niigata, Japan, founded by Ken Usami, who also established the Niigata Beer company. It is made from malt whiskies sourced from around the world, mainly Scotland, married and aged for 15 years in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.
The range is defined by a final maturation in Japanese Mizunara oak, carried out in Niigata's seaside surroundings. It is bottled at 43% ABV with no added colouring.
The nose combines salted caramel, old leather, campfire embers, maltose, blueberry cheesecake and old oak. The palate is oily, with orchard fruits, lemon zest, milk coffee, ginger, cinnamon and dark chocolate. The finish is long and drying, with oak and a touch of malted barley.
