Starward Fortis is an Australian single malt matured entirely in red wine barriques that previously held Australian Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is about three years old and bottled at 50% ABV in a 70cl bottle, with natural colour and without chill-filtering.
The whisky is full-bodied and intense, with blackberry, vanilla and fig. The nose brings Madagascan vanilla pods, toasted oak, blackberry jam, raisins, caramelised figs and overripe plums. Vanilla leads the palate, followed by quince paste, Muscadelle raisins, chocolate ganache, cinnamon and baked banana bread. The finish is oily and long, with baking spices from the oak, ripe figs and raisins.
