The Essence of Suntory Yamazaki 2009 Spanish Oak (50cl, 56%)

This is a single malt from the Yamazaki Distillery in Japan, released in the Essence of Suntory series. It was matured for nine years in brand new Spanish oak casks, a departure from the ex-bourbon casks that the distillery mostly uses for its standard releases. It is bottled at a cask strength of 56% in a 50cl bottle, without dilution with water. The new oak is credited with pronounced wood, spice and a touch of vanillin sweetness. Reviewers describe a nose of caramel, butterscotch and crème brûlée with a prominent spiciness. The palate is surprisingly sweet, a little like bourbon, thick and slightly sharp, with woody spice and hints of charcoal.
