This is a three-year-old Australian rye from The Gospel distillery in Brunswick, north of Melbourne, bottled by That Boutique-y Whisky Company for its Return to Oz series. The mash is 51% unmalted Australian rye and 49% malted barley.
It matured in new American oak with a finish in an Australian red wine cask. Batch 1 is 434 numbered bottles of 50cl, bottled at a natural cask strength of 58.6%, without chill-filtration or added colour.
The nose brings dark rye bread, butter, light toffee and stewed cherries. On the palate, rye bread meets caramel, vanilla, allspice, cloves, pepper and red fruit. The finish is dry and long, with dried red fruit, crème caramel and woody spice.
