Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye is an uncut, unfiltered, barrel-proof straight rye whiskey from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky, aged around six years. It is released once a year as part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection and is bottled in a 750ml bottle.
It is named after the New Orleans barman credited with popularising the Sazerac cocktail. The mashbill is roughly 51% rye with corn and malted barley, and the strength changes from one release to the next.
The nose offers toffee, fig cake, candied fruit, mint and baking spices. The palate is dense and oily, with rye spice, brown sugar, molasses, cherry and black coffee, and the finish is long, with charred oak, vanilla custard and black pepper.
