Akashi Red is a blended Japanese whisky, a mix of malt and grain whiskies from Eigashima Shuzo, the producer behind White Oak Distillery in Akashi, Hyogo. It is bottled at 40% in a 50cl bottle.
Maturation uses a combination of casks, including Japanese shochu, ex-bourbon and ex-sherry barrels. Eigashima was established in 1888 and received its whisky licence in 1919.
The nose is malty, with treacle, citrus zest, white pepper and toasted grain. Cherry, sweet cereal, vanilla and cinnamon come through on the palate, with a smooth, gently oily texture. The medium finish brings dried apricot, citrus peel and gentle oak spice.
