This is a Whyte & Mackay 21 Year Old Gold Medallion blend from the 1980s, amber in colour.
The nose is wide-ranging: walnut liqueur, aged Oloroso, nuts of all kinds, dried mushrooms, wet earth, sandalwood and black tea, followed by green olives, umami paste, caraway, sunflower oil and mustard seeds. The palate balances aged peat and dried fruit with trail mix and a resinous, earthy dunnage character, turning spicier and more peppery with time, with orange peel, old fashioneds, cocktail bitters and liquorice. The finish is long, with soft waxes, shoe polish, aged mead, wild flowers and olive oil.
