This is a 21 year old Whyte & Mackay blend, the Gold Medallion expression, bottled in the 1980s.
Amber in colour, it has a nose of walnut liqueur, aged Oloroso, mixed nuts, dried mushrooms and wet earth, with sandalwood and black tea behind them. Green olives, caraway and mustard seeds follow.
The palate combines aged peat, dried fruit and a resinous, earthy dunnage character. With time it turns spicier and more peppery, bringing orange peel, cocktail bitters and liquorice. The finish is long, with soft wax, aged mead, wild flowers and olive oil.
