Gentleman Jack is a Tennessee whiskey from the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, bottled at 40% ABV in a 70cl bottle. It was introduced in 1988 and matured in new white oak casks, giving a light amber colour.
It is charcoal mellowed twice, once before maturation and once after, whereas the classic Jack Daniel's is mellowed only once. The distillery makes its own charcoal from sugar maple, and the whiskey seeps slowly through a layer about three metres deep. The mash uses corn, rye and malted barley.
The nose is soft and balanced, with orange, vanilla and a hint of mint. The palate recalls baked apples, with caramel and mint. The finish starts sweet and fades slowly with a lightly dry apple-skin note.
