Macallan M Black - 1824 Series 2017 Release is a whisky from Macallan (Speyside). Bottled at 45% ABV, 70cl. The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. Now owned by the Edrington Group, The Macallan prides itself on its Six Pillars, which include its curiously small stills, very narrow ‘cut’ of new make spirit and exceptional cask management. It is the most sought after whisky for collectors. A new £140 million subterranean distillery and visitor centre on the Easter Elchies estate was opened to the public in the summer of 2018 and has since won several awards for its architectural quality; with its exciting features including glass walls of vintage whiskies, a circular pod of copper pot stills, and a Boutique reflecting those in Dubai and Heathrow airports. Black M Series When most people think of peated whisky, examples from the Speyside region aren’t usually what first spring to mind. However, the use of peat used to be much more prevalent than it is today, and this Black edition of Macallan’s M series embraces that legacy. The peated spirit has been aged in traditional sherry casks to create a whisky that is more akin to early 20 th century distillations than it is to modern Macallan. The Decanter itself is a showstopper too. Another product of the distillery’s long running partnership with French crystal maestros, Lalique, it is hand blown using black crystal which is much trickier to work with than its clear counterpart.
