This is a single barrel bourbon from Old Elk, a Colorado distillery, aged for eight years and drawn from barrel 2053. It is a straight bourbon made from 51% corn, 34% malted barley and 15% rye. The malt content is the distinctive part, at four times that of a typical bourbon, and it sits alongside a classic profile of vanilla, caramel and gentle spice. The nose is very sweet, with cereal, cinnamon, oak spice and caramel latte. On the palate, oak spice, peppercorn and caramel come with malt cereal, syrup and cinnamon. The finish turns darker, with seasoned oak, espresso grounds and wet tobacco, plus cinnamon and clove from the rye.
