Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 23 Year Old is a wheated Kentucky straight bourbon, made at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. It spent twenty-three years in oak and is bottled at 47.8% ABV (95.6 proof), taking on a rich mahogany colour.
The nose recalls a crisp autumn day, with ripe red apples, cherries and tobacco. Wood leads on the palate, supported by caramel, apple, apricot, leather, walnuts and vanilla crème brûlée. The finish is long and rich, opening with bold oak and caramel before fading slowly.
